At the Heal You Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Clinic therapists use the cutting-edge practise of dry needling to treat patients with pain and movement problems. Myofascial trigger points are tense bands of skeletal muscles found within a broader muscle group. It is a professional process that requires utilising a sterile, tiny filiform needle to pierce the skin and target these trigger points. Dry needling has no associated injection of medication, hence the term. It is also known as myofascial trigger point dry needling or trigger point dry needling (TDN). Not acupuncture, that is. When a wound is sustained, the injured tissues become inflamed, which causes them to enter a defensive tension state that prevents further injury. This preventive tension condition prevents waste products from leaving the injured site as well as oxygen-rich blood from reaching the wound. When the oxygen level at the spot drops, the body produces fibroblast cells, which result in fibrosis or scar tissue. The capacity of the muscles to operate as a whole is impacted when fibrosis, or scar tissue, accumulates around the tissues and muscles. This condition restricts range of motion and irritates and compresses the nerves.
